Tennis Elbow

    Sports related disorder causing inflammation to the outside elbow bone and injury to tendons and muscles due to overuse and repetitive use of the forearm muscles also termed as Lateral Epicondylosis.

    Patient has pain gripping and performing lifting of even small objects or any activity that extends the elbow. Its rare to undergo surgery for treating tennis elbow.

    Temporary relief is provided by use of Anti Inflammatory Medicines like Brufen, Aspirin or regular application of Ice or Heat Therapy.

    Permanent relief is provided by performing: Progressive Stretching using band extensions : Conditional Exercise: Holding the finger tips of the injured hand inserted in a thick rubber band until they reach the first outer phalange and stretch the fingers outwards and retracting without letting the band slip for 25 times.

    Strengthening the Rotator Cuff: Preventive Exercise: Wrist Curls: Forward and reverse wrist curls using bar bells or dumb bells (3 Sets of 10 Reps Each)
    Dumb bell Lateral Raise: Holding the Dumb bells at sides near the legs, raise the dumbbells with palms facing inwards till the arms are parallel to the floor. (3 Sets of 10 Reps Each). Movement is in Vertical Plane.
    Bicep Curls palms facing down: Holding the Dumb bells at sides near the legs, curl the forearm with palms facing downwards till the forearm is parallel to the floor. (3 Sets of 10 Reps Each). Movement is in Vertical Plane.

    Resistance Bands: Option 1: One end of the Resistance Band is secured at arms height. With the upper arm from elbow to shoulder stationary pull the free end of the resistance band till the forearm reaches hand shake position. Movement is in horizontal plane. Keep the back straight. (3 Sets of 10 Reps Each).
    Resistance Bands: Option 2: Using resistance band with one end of the Band secured on the toes raise the other end till it reaches in front of the face, keep the back straight while lifting and feel the resistance in the forearm.
    Braces and Straps: Usage of wrist and forearm braces help treat tennis elbow effectively with results visible in four to six weeks. Prefer using braces of materials that absorb perspiration as terrycloth material. People with sensitive skin should avoid using latex based splints.
